Tape In vs Clip In Extensions: Which Method Is Right for You?

If you are new to extensions, this is almost always the first fork in the road. Tape ins and clip ins are the two most popular ways to add length and volume, and they solve two very different problems. One is a semi permanent upgrade you wear around the clock. The other is instant transformation you can do yourself in minutes. Here is how to know which one belongs in your hair.

The short answer

Choose tape ins if you want hair that is simply yours now. They stay in for weeks at a time, move with you, and nobody can tell where you end and the extension begins. Choose clip ins if you want length and volume on demand. They go in for the event, the shoot, or the weekend, and come out before bed. Neither is better. They are built for different lives.

How tape ins work

Tape in extensions are slim wefts of hair attached to a thin, flexible adhesive strip. A stylist sandwiches a small section of your natural hair between two wefts, pressing them together so the extension lies completely flat against your head. A full install typically takes under an hour, and because the bonds sit flush against the scalp, they disappear even in fine hair and high ponytails.

Once installed, tape ins are part of your hair. You wash them, style them, sleep in them, and live in them. As your natural hair grows, the bonds move away from the scalp, so every six to eight weeks a stylist removes them, replaces the adhesive, and reinstalls the same hair closer to the root. With proper care, quality Remy tape ins can be reinstalled multiple times before the hair itself needs replacing.

What tape ins ask of you is a little ongoing care. Gentle cleansing, keeping heavy oils and conditioner away from the bonds, and a visit to your stylist for each move up. Our care guide covers the full ritual.

How clip ins work

Clip in extensions are wefts with small pressure clips sewn along the top. You section your hair, snap the clips in at the root, and blend. The first time takes fifteen minutes in front of a mirror. By the tenth time, it takes five. No stylist, no adhesive, no commitment.

Because clip ins come out at the end of the day, they are the gentlest option there is. Your natural hair takes a break every night, and the extension hair itself tends to last a long time because it is not being washed and slept in daily. A well cared for set of Remy clip ins can look beautiful for a year or more of regular wear.

The tradeoff is that clip ins are an accessory, not an upgrade. They are not designed to be worn to bed or through workouts, and wearing them daily means clipping them in daily.

Side by side

Install. Tape ins need a stylist and about an hour. Clip ins need you and a mirror.

Wear time. Tape ins stay in around the clock for six to eight weeks per install. Clip ins go in and out whenever you choose.

Feel. Tape ins vanish into your hair and are easy to forget entirely. Clip ins are secure and comfortable but you know they are there.

Care. Tape ins share your shower and your styling routine. Clip ins get washed only every several wears.

Commitment. Tape ins are a relationship. Clip ins are a great first date.

Which one is right for you?

Go with tape ins if you want to wake up every day with the hair, if you have fine or thin hair that needs invisible bonds, or if you are done thinking about it and just want it handled. Go with clip ins if you are extension curious and want to try the look first, if you only want the drama for occasions, or if you prefer to change your look week to week.

Plenty of our clients do both. Tape ins for everyday length, and a set of clip ins in the same shade for nights when they want extra volume. Because every Serova shade is identical across methods, the two blend seamlessly.

The part that matters more than the method

Whichever method you choose, the hair itself decides how good it looks. Every Serova extension is 100% Remy human hair with the cuticle intact and aligned, which is why it stays soft, resists tangling, and moves like it grew from your own head. Both methods come in the same stylist approved shades from Jet Black to Icy Blonde, in lengths from 18 to 28 inches. If you are between shades, email us a photo in natural light and we will match you personally.

Still deciding? Our FAQ answers the most common questions, or browse the full collection here. And if you are a licensed stylist, our Stylist Program gets you wholesale pricing on both methods.

With love, always.
